The rapidly spreading cholera outbreak in #Yemen has exceeded 200,000 suspected cases, increasing at an average of 5,000 a day. We are now facing the worst cholera outbreak in the world.
In just two months, #cholera has spread to almost every governorate of this war-torn country. Already more than 1,300 people have died – one quarter of them children – and the death toll is expected to rise.
@UNICEF, WHO and our partners are racing to stop the acceleration of this deadly outbreak. We are working around the clock to detect and track the spread of disease and to reach people with clean water, adequate sanitation and medical treatment. Rapid response teams are going house-to-house to reach families with information about how to protect themselves by cleaning and storing drinking water. 📷: @whoyemen
Around the world, people are living longer but often with multiple diseases and conditions that require care over many years.
Unfortunately too many people are not informed or consulted in the care they receive.
In some countries, only 1 in 3 people have their risks of their treatment explained to them.
1 in 5 people have at least one unnecessary test, and up to 40% of health spending is wasted due to inefficiency.
#HealthCare should not be like this.
Nearly 3 million newborns and mothers could be saved each year by:
1. Investing in maternal and newborn care during labour, birth and the first week of life.
2. Improving the quality of maternal and newborn care
3. Reaching every woman and newborn to reduce inequalities
4. Harnessing the power of parents, families and communities
5. Counting every newborn with measurement, programme-tracking and accountability.
Today is #WorldRefugeeDay. WHO is enabling Syrian doctors and nurses to provide health services for refugees in Turkey. "With this project, we felt like doctors for the first time in two years. We felt like doctors again" said Dr. Mohammed. We stand #WithRefugees.
