Slowly Globetrekking. I now dream more of running away, than I ever did as a child. The future is certain, but the past is unpredictable.

The rocks originally all have the same colour, but were "baked" from the intense heat of the magma, up until around the last eruption 4.500 years ago. The exception is the black ah, which only forms when an eruption occurs under a glacier, which is exactly what happened seven years ago with Eyjafjallajökull. #iceland #caving #volcano #Þríhnúkagígur #thrihnukagigur

Deep underground we went, after battling the elements up top. A six minute 120 metre descent into the non-collapsed interior (which is very unusual), where lights fill the cavernous room. Down here it's quiet except for the pitter-patter of raindrops from the surface, though the temperature dropped sharply. #iceland #caving #volcano #Þríhnúkagígur #thrihnukagigur

I've always loved all things underground, one of my best birthdays in recent years was spent cave exploring in Slovenia. So when I heard that it was possible in Iceland to go into a volcano... Didn't expect 20-25 m/s wind and driving rain though 😂. #iceland #caving #volcano #Þríhnúkagígur #thrihnukagigur

Haukadalur, a geothermally active area on Iceland, is most famous for its two geysers, Geyser (the original) and Strokkur (one of the four pictures here). Such a classic site, and seeing one of those hot springs suddenly erupt, really is something in a category of its own, primal nature. #iceland #geyser #haukadalur #strokkur #hotsprings #geothermal #eruption

Gullfoss is the archetypal Icelandic waterfall, large, powerful, beautiful, and with a legend of how a man swam across to be with his beloved, the only one who has managed to do so (in fact, a tourist who ignored all warning signs fell in two days ago, and still hasn't been recovered). #iceland #gullfoss #gullfosswaterfall #waterfall #legend #saga

National assemblies were held here from 930 to 1798, right where the American and European tectonic plates meet. Symbolic and culturally important, Þingvellir is both beautiful and interesting to visit, jumping from Europe to America and back again. #iceland #þingvellir #thingvellir #tectonic #plate #divide

I'll be in Iceland for the coming three weeks, working at the World Scout Moot. Before I get that far though, I'll have a few days on my own, to see Reykjavik and the area around it. #iceland #reykjavik #wsm #wsm2017 #worldscoutmoot #worldscoutmoot2017 #moot2017 #streetart

Copenhagen Carnival from above. I was trying to go shopping in the city centre, had to pick up a present for a wedding, and to my great shame, I arrived a few minutes late. Still though, I applaud attempts to make the city more lively, even at such personal costs 😉. #copenhagen #axelborg #cphlife #cph #delditkbh #mitkbh #originalcoffee #storkespringvandet #copenhagencarnival #carnival

Axelborg in central Copenhagen, what a lovely view up through the building. There's also a paternoster elevator in the building, something I've wanted to try for years. #copenhagen #axelborg #cphlife #cph #delditkbh #mitkbh #rotund #entrance #staircase

Yeah yeah, it's pretty and everything, but I've been wanting to ride a paternoster for years, but they're sadly quite rare these days. They're like a long line of small cabins, revolving continuously, as you can see, as I go over the top of the top floor, and down under the bottom floor. So neat. #copenhagen #axelborg #paternoster #cphlife #cph #delditkbh #mitkbh #lift #elevator

On our last day in Tirana, we took a gondola up Mount Dajt, to walk in the forest and to enjoy the grand view over Tirana (obscured by clouds). Albania and Kosovo have been almost beyond reproach; friendly people everywhere, delicious food, gorgeous nature (Albania in particular), and with beautiful historical heritage (Kosovo in particular). Oh, and the bakeries rock my world. Maybe what I enjoyed the most, was how much these two countries challenged my idea of what the Balkans and Eastern Europe are. I expected poor post-communist countries, and got nothing of the sort. I will wholeheartedly recommend Albania and Kosovo to anyone who asks, and maybe even go out of my way to recommend it to people who don't. #albania #albanian #shqiptar #shqiperia #balkan #balkans #kosova #kosovo #kosovar #mount #mountain #dajt #dajtimountain #dajti #mountdajti #mountdajt #forest #sunset

A final walk up to Berat Castle, after a final (delicious) dinner in Berat. On the way up I saw something I've always wanted to, bioluminescent insects. Insects with flickering butts flying about, turning on and off again. You could trace insects flying through the air, the light would turn off, and a few seconds later, turn back on a little way away. Looking away to a hill opposite, we saw thousands of insects flickering out of sync, like a starry silkcloth being rustled by a gentle wind. #albania #albanian #shqiptar #shqiperia #balkan #balkans #berat #ottoman #ottomanempire #fortress #beratfortress #castle #beratcastle #sunset #horizon
