Slowly Globetrekking. I now dream more of running away, than I ever did as a child. The future is certain, but the past is unpredictable.
The rocks originally all have the same colour, but were "baked" from the intense heat of the magma, up until around the last eruption 4.500 years ago. The exception is the black ah, which only forms when an eruption occurs under a glacier, which is exactly what happened seven years ago with Eyjafjallajökull. #iceland#caving#volcano#Þríhnúkagígur#thrihnukagigur
Deep underground we went, after battling the elements up top. A six minute 120 metre descent into the non-collapsed interior (which is very unusual), where lights fill the cavernous room. Down here it's quiet except for the pitter-patter of raindrops from the surface, though the temperature dropped sharply. #iceland#caving#volcano#Þríhnúkagígur#thrihnukagigur
I've always loved all things underground, one of my best birthdays in recent years was spent cave exploring in Slovenia. So when I heard that it was possible in Iceland to go into a volcano... Didn't expect 20-25 m/s wind and driving rain though 😂. #iceland#caving#volcano#Þríhnúkagígur#thrihnukagigur
Haukadalur, a geothermally active area on Iceland, is most famous for its two geysers, Geyser (the original) and Strokkur (one of the four pictures here). Such a classic site, and seeing one of those hot springs suddenly erupt, really is something in a category of its own, primal nature. #iceland#geyser#haukadalur#strokkur#hotsprings#geothermal#eruption
Gullfoss is the archetypal Icelandic waterfall, large, powerful, beautiful, and with a legend of how a man swam across to be with his beloved, the only one who has managed to do so (in fact, a tourist who ignored all warning signs fell in two days ago, and still hasn't been recovered). #iceland#gullfoss#gullfosswaterfall#waterfall#legend#saga
National assemblies were held here from 930 to 1798, right where the American and European tectonic plates meet. Symbolic and culturally important, Þingvellir is both beautiful and interesting to visit, jumping from Europe to America and back again. #iceland#þingvellir#thingvellir#tectonic#plate#divide
On our last day in Tirana, we took a gondola up Mount Dajt, to walk in the forest and to enjoy the grand view over Tirana (obscured by clouds). Albania and Kosovo have been almost beyond reproach; friendly people everywhere, delicious food, gorgeous nature (Albania in particular), and with beautiful historical heritage (Kosovo in particular). Oh, and the bakeries rock my world. Maybe what I enjoyed the most, was how much these two countries challenged my idea of what the Balkans and Eastern Europe are. I expected poor post-communist countries, and got nothing of the sort. I will wholeheartedly recommend Albania and Kosovo to anyone who asks, and maybe even go out of my way to recommend it to people who don't. #albania#albanian#shqiptar#shqiperia#balkan#balkans#kosova#kosovo#kosovar#mount#mountain#dajt#dajtimountain#dajti#mountdajti#mountdajt#forest#sunset
