Eight years ago, on our first road trip across America, we toured Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House because it provided the setting for a popular children's book. It's bittersweet to return for my youngest's college visit.
Grateful that another routine college admissions presentation has been enlivened by the stunning Gothic architecture of the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel.
It's impossible to stick to a vegan diet when the opportunity to sample Pikachu ice cream presents itself.
Nothing like a national park to help you appreciate man's place in the universe.
Despite broiling temperatures, Case Western won us over. Alex likes the focus on experiential learning and single-door admission which lets students switch easily between programs. I like that Cleveland is a great city with lots of cultural attractions in one of the most green urban areas in the country. Best of all, Ohioans are just plain NICE.
Sorely tempted to skip the college visit so I can stay at what is now my favorite botanical garden. #cleveland
One of my favorite things to do on cross country road trips is to stay in a wide variety of accommodations. But going from a train caboose in Amish country to a Cleveland mansion may be one of the starkest of contrasts. And, to put the cherry on top, we were upgraded to a suite. If only I had seen the notecard left on a table, we would also have had complimentary drinks last night. All this, and I never even mentioned that I'm a travel writer!
Mr. Ed took to heart P.T. Barnum's dictum, "When entertaining the public, it is best to have an elephant." There are more than 2000 in his candy store, but Miss Elle is the crowd favorite. #lincolnhighway
One of the joys of this road trip is that my son and I are revisiting the Lincoln Highway. This particular stop was interesting because you no longer can photograph the Aero Fuel location because of homeland security concerns deriving from their propane gas business.
Taking a love of footwear to its logical conclusion.
Waking up to bird song in my little caboose, appropriately enough, a relic of the California Western Railroad. Not sure why it's labeled the "Skunk Train."
