Pokhara is a lakeside town where most people start or end their Annapurna treks. We boarded a tiny airplane notorious for crashing (google Jomsom Airport) and in 20 mins we went from Morocco to Thailand. We spent two days eating too much and getting massaged within an inch of our lives.

Nepal's Mustang region is a harsh and arid Tibetan kingdom. This is as far north as you can go in Nepal without needing a special $500 permit. Hidden in the massive Kaligandaki gorge are tiny oases like Kagbeni, where you can eat yak burgers and get lost in the warren of stone houses and tiny shrines. The guy with the gigantic wooden hard on is meant to protect the town from harm.

Now we're on the other side of the pass, and it's like going from Switzerland to Morocco.

So yesterday got up at 4:30 to do the main thing we came to Nepal to do: the Thorung La Pass. It was unbelievably challenging. At 5400m, it's just 400m lower than the highest point in Africa. With every breath, you get less than half the amount of oxygen you'd get at sea level, which feels like the worst hangover ever. Combined with walking through thick snow carrying heavy packs for 8 hours, it made for quite a tough day.

This is the deadliest 1km of the entire 230km Annapurna Circuit, known as the scree slopes, where stones rain down pretty much constantly onto the path. In some places it's not much wider than one hiking boot, so you have to step very carefully and quietly over piles of slippery gravel to avoid triggering a landslide.

We walked for two days to get to Tilicho Lake, the world's highest big lake. It was frozen over and it doesn't look nice in photos, so here's a mountain reflected in a tiny pond that is not the highest in the world.
