73 years ago today, my Grandfather stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, in an effort to liberate France from Germany. He was tossed out of an American U-Boat, touting over 50lbs of gear and supplies, nearly drowning in the process. Despite all of this, he made it to shore where he then spent the duration of his time refueling infantry fighting vehicles. He was discharged in December of 1945 and married my late-grandmother just three months later. Today, he is 94 years old and volunteers his time researching and archiving local history in York, Pennsylvania. He has revisited Normandy several times, and is pictured here in 2014, sitting on the very same beach he arrived on decades ago.
