Want to learn how to draw fun, high-contrast lettering like this? It’s just one of the many different things we’ll cover in my lettering workshop right here in Austin, one week from today!
Let’s have a contest, shall we? We need to make this workshop as fun as possible to really kick this US tour off right, so let’s fill it up. Comment on this post, and tag a friend you’d love to attend my workshop with. I’ll choose one winner at random, and you’ll both get whichever ticket level you want, at 50% off! If you’ve already bought your ticket, but still want to play, you can jump in too, and if you win, your friend will get their ticket free and they can pay you back that 50%! Deal? Let’s spread the word and get this party jumpin’!
Tickets available now at handlingthecurve.ticketleap.com/austin or through the link in my bio!
One of Austin's nicknames is the City of the Violet Crown, a nickname it actually shares with Athens, Greece, as it turns out. In Austin, the phrase is thought to refer to either the atmospheric phenomenon known as the Belt of Venus, or the city's moonlight towers, the only ones in the world that are not only still standing, but being actively preserved and even restored. .
Today I learned that Austin’s moon towers were actually manufactured in Indiana by Fort Wayne Electric Company, which was a delightfully wild surprise, because Ft. Wayne, IN is where my wife and both kids were born, and were I mostly grew up. Crazy!
Things are firming up for a lot of locations on this crazy summer tour of ours, and just in time, too! I’ve had a few people ask for a more general image to share about the tour as a whole, so I threw together this “band tour” style list. So if you don’t live in a place where we’re coming specifically, or just want to share about our fun little project here in general, here we go!
These are all the cities and dates of the workshops happening in the core of the tour, i.e. our road trip. I’ve received numerous messages from cities and states (and countries, lol) not on our route asking us to come there, so I’ve actually started discussing other satellite workshop events with them as a sort of tour extension, where I would travel to them directly by myself. So keep those coming, too!
New stickers for my wife's customers! When these people see a hard to find print they love, they stop at nothing to track it down! 🦄🦄🦄
TOUR ANNOUNCEMENT! I’m so excited to share this new element of this crazy tour adventure. I’ve been planning to design a “tour poster” to sell for cheap at each of the workshops around the country, but last week, I had a better idea.
Yes, we still needed a tour poster, but why not make it a big collaboration for an even bigger cause? My buddy @frenchie_fry at @frenchpaperco is donating all the paper, and we’re looking for a local print shop in each city willing to chip in a small run of these two-up, 13x20, one-color, white-on-black prints. .
We’ll sell them for $10 a piece at the workshops, and 100% of the sales will go into a Curves Ahead Scholarship Fund to be awarded after the tour to an individual pursuing an education in the letter-based arts! This will be an open application process after the tour’s over, and will be awarded publicly, of course!
Are you a print shop in one of the city’s on the @curvesaheadtour tour list, and interested in replacing the “Your Logo Here” spot with your logo? French has your paper! I’ve got the design! Let’s make it happen and help perpetuate quality education in type and lettering!
Email me at email@example.com and let’s do this!
Some new lettering for some materials for the @curvesaheadtour, set in #GoodtypeRed for #goodtypetuesday. Making a major announcement involving this lettering probably later today, so stay tuned, especially if you're a student...👩🎓👨🎓
Erasing my shadows for a one-color screenprint... Do you have your ticket yet for the workshop in your city? What are you waiting for?
Phoenix! I'm coming to your town for a workshop as part of the @curvesaheadtour, in barely three weeks!
Here's the deal: I want to give someone and a friend a pair of half-price tickets!
Comment on this post, and tag a Phoenix friend that you'd want to come to my workshop with, and you'll be entered to win a pair of half-price tickets for the two of you! You can enter as many times as you want, so long as you tag a different friend each time!
Check out all the details about the workshops and the rest of the tour at curvesaheadtour.com/workshops!
**REGISTRATIONS OPEN NOW** The @curvesaheadtour is moving right along, and we leave Austin for this crazy trip exactly three weeks from today!
We’re dialing in the details on the specific spaces we’ll be working in everywhere, but you can secure your spot now, and you’ll automatically be notified as all the specifics are finalized in the coming days!
There are two sessions to each workshop, a General Session where we’ll talk about what goes into executing a custom hand-lettering piece from start to finish. We'll look at how and where to find the best resources for study, research, and reference, how to get started with sketching initial concepts, and quickly iterating through ideas to get where you're trying to go a little faster. We'll work through the best ways to move forward, once you've found that perfect style and layout, and are ready to clean it up and execute final, digital artwork.
Then for those wanting to go a little further, there’s an option to stay a little longer for the Capital Session. In this more intimate, small-group setting, we'll dive deeper into some finer, more specific techniques, explore other lettering styles, and their defining principles, and for everyone that can bring a laptop with Illustrator installed, we'll even dig further into the best practices and preferred methods of specifically drawing letters in vector.
Spots are limited, and given the tight-scheduled nature of this trip, there will likely be zero opportunity for adding additional workshops if they sell out, so don’t wait!
Finally threw some posters up after a year and a half of non-committal in this studio, so I could have a decent background for a promo video for a thing. 🙄
