Colorado Weekend πŸ”πŸŒ²||| I grew up in Southern California close to the sand and water. After going to college in flat Illinois, I craved waves and fresh morning air every time I came home. It wasn't until I lived in North Korea that I came to appreciate and love mountains. North Korea is 73% mountainous and has many untouched, seldom visited national parks. Though it would take 2 to 3 weeks to process the paperwork with the government for a visit to some of these places, it was something I always looked forward to. The opportunity to "escape" the confines of my compound in Pyongyang left me often day-dreaming of hikes and mountains as I taught university students. Today, mountains remain a source of refreshment after a weeks work. I look forward to the day when I can freely hike with my Korean friends. ||| #colorado

A year ago I asked a group of Instagram friends to come with me on a tour of North Korea for the 2016 Pyongyang Marathon. After living there for 4 years and never being allowed any outside guests from home, I was finally able to share this world in realtime and not solely on Instagram. I look back a year ago today with the knowledge that the week with these friends in this closed country was the start of closure on a truly unique chapter in my life. Thank you for coming along and experiencing this country with me! ||| #pyongyang #northkorea

Refugee Crisis ||| Last summer I worked on a project along the South Sudan / Uganda border. My task was to document a radio program seeking to bring peace and reconciliation to South Sudanese refugees pouring into Uganda. Though these refugees came from the same country, they represented over 60 tribes. Imagine 60 political parties living in your neighborhood or city. Different ideology, dealings with conflict, and thoughts about women's rights. I saw first hand the power of radio to bring these tribes together and work through historical conflict. I believe that mass media can be used as a tool for sharing stories of hope and reconciliation. We need more of this among our warring tribes here in America. ||| #uganda #southsudan

For nearly 4 years, I worked in Pyongyang, North Korea at a private university just outside the capital. For me, @instagram was a way to share with family and friends the closed world that they'd never be able to see. After taking thousands and thousands of photos, I'd sift through them to pick the "best" with the desire to share a story of my life in North Korea. What excites me most about the new multiple post feature is the ability to share collective moments of time, the potential to inform about culture and news, and for me personally to be able to give a glimpse into foreign and different countries I lived and worked in. Loving what everyone is posting so far! The following are scenes i'd often see during my weekly shopping trips while living in Pyongyang. ||| #pyongyang #northkorea
