FRUITS ARE CARBS and there is nothing wrong with that. A lot of fruit actually contain more carbs than foods deemed "bad" 🚫 like bread.

I'm not saying to cut out fruit and bread, carbs are essential. Fruits contain a ton of nutrients, vitamins and have a lot of benefits! BUT, it is beneficial to know what's what ☝so you can make informed choices based on your dietary preferences and goals. I personally include both whole grain sprouted bread and fruit in my diet because it works for me. Bananas 🍌 are great preworkout!"

👍 Intermittent fasting (IF) means restricting the amount of food you eat for a given period, followed by a period of normal eating. It is growing in popularity, among both fitness enthusiasts and the wider population. Proponents of IF say it has multiple benefits, including improving body composition and reducing fat stores while increasing muscle mass.

🙋How would I do it? There are many ways in which people can approach IF. There's the alternate-day fast, in which you restrict your calories every other day, a fast once in every seven days or a fast every third day. However, the one that's achieved recent prominence is the 16-8 method, when you spend 16 hours a day fasting and the remaining eight hours feeding.

🤔 Does it work? Research shows a variety of benefits of intermittent fasting. Studies conducted on animals have demonstrated increased lifespan thanks to fasting and calorie restriction. Studies have been done on humans too, but the findings aren’t as concrete. However, they are positive in that they demonstrate IF raises insulin sensitivity and may lower body-fat levels and blood pressure. The main way it works, like any fat loss approach is that it is a form of calorie restriction and can induce a calorie deficit through time-restricted feeding.

😢 What are the disadvantages? A serious problem for many, not surprisingly, is hunger. Going long periods between meals is something we in the developed world are unused to and research shows a higher meal frequency is better for maintaining feelings of fullness.

We all know some guy who’s packed on a few pounds (or A LOT) over the years. This is a very REAL problem that men suffer from (but will not admit because hey… we’re supposed to have our act together). To accuse us guys of ‘being lazy = that’s why we’re fat’ is unfair, as it’s really more to it than that.

👊🏼I’d like to dedicate this post to MYSELF first and admit that I myself go through a hard time trying to keep my act together. It’s not easy… but it’s not impossible either.

Sherlyn: Weight really shouldn't matter to the average girl. When you're focusing too much on it, it's not gonna help you to get anywhere because our weight fluctuates all the time, depending on water and food intake and whether we are bloated or not from our periods.

🌈I know we often can't help but constantly compare ourselves to others. I know lots of you always ask me about my height and weight just so that you can compare and see if we are similar, but ya know, even if we are wearing the same clothing size or have the same height and weight, we will still look different because each person's body is unique. I didn't understand that until very recently😂

🌈When I saw all the transformation photos, I often felt negative about myself. I felt like why m I still not having a body like that when I work my ass out 5 days at the gym and keep pushing myself to eat clean. I constantly compared myself with others. And I judged myself for not working hard enough. And I totally ignored the fact that my body changes over time. -
🌈Pic on the left, I'd just returned from the US. I gained 10kg, I was so ashamed of my body! Fast forward to the picture in the middle, I was bloated like hell! My body can look like what you see on the right today and next day I would be bloated like crazy.  To be honest, I too have a hard time accepting my body now because I've gained weight and you see, everyone thinks that I look good, but when I look at myself in the mirror I feel horrible. For those who DM me saying they hate themselves, pls know that I feel the same as you some days, and I want to tell you that we can get past this feeling and feel good again!

This post is timely during this Ramadan season where hotels are overbooked and full capacity at their buffet dinners! 🍝🍔🍣 Buffets are meant to be enjoyed - so we shouldn’t really be that party pooper who’s only having a salad because we’re ‘on a diet’, so let’s discuss some tips to help you stay on track.

🍽 A great way to watch your food quantities is to opt for a smaller plate. Skip all the carbs that’s right at the start and head to the veggies and meats first. Load up on lean protein sources (meat, fish, chicken, etc) and veggies, before heading back to the starchy carbs (rice, noodles, breads).

🍤 Avoid or minimize fried, greasy foods, especially foods that are breaded and fried as they absorb a lot of oil which you’ll end up eating. Avoid all ‘coloured’ and sugared drinks and opt for water, unsweetened tea or coffee - it’s a terrible waste to drink your calories at a buffet when you should be eating them.

🌝 If you happen to take a food item you do not like, it’s OK to leave it behind on the plate. No one in Africa is going to die because you put too much food on your plate. Better to leave it than to eat it.

🛑 Once you start feeling full, know that chances are high you’ve already eaten too much. Stop going for desserts or anything else - if you’re full it means your body is saying STOP!

🍓 Enjoy your meal, your company/friends, then wipe the slate clean, and get right back on track tomorrow. Don’t let one meal cause you to give up on yourself for the whole week. Every day is a new day.

🦄 Just because a food has a buzzword attached to it like ‘superfood’ or packed with ‘healthy fats’….doesn’t mean that the rules of moderation, portion control and calorie balance go out of the window.

🌴 For example. Here are two smoothies. The first is a recipe packed with ‘healthy fats’ and ‘superfoods’:

🥜 30g peanut butter, half an avocado, 2 tbsp. flax seeds, 100g blueberries, 1 banana and 300ml milk. It comes to 800 calories.

🥛 Compare this to a simple high protein and high fibre smoothie made with the basics:

🍓 300ml milk, 1 scoop of whey protein, 50g oats and 100g of frozen berries. It’s 500 calories with more fibre and protein in it too which are great for satiety and keeping hunger pangs away.

🤔 The ‘superfoods smoothie’ is even quite conservative as I saw a couple of recipes that were using cans of coconut milk in them! Now you know I am all for being able to eat or drink anything you like so long as it falls within your macronutrient targets but 800 calories on a smoothie doesn’t seem like a good use of macros to me!

In fact, it’s just as easy to over-eat in a ‘healthy’ joint like it is at a fast food outlet.

👍Yes this is an extreme example to compare a smoothie bowl with a dessert from McDonalds but we need to know this - just because something is called a ‘smoothie’ doesn’t mean it’s low calorie and sugar free.

🍒Fruits especially can be pretty high in sugar. And sugar, regardless of whether it comes from candy or if it comes from a fruit = 4 calories per gram - and if you’ve been trying to lose fat but the results aren’t coming… it’s time to re-examine our healthy indulgences to see if it’s causing us to exceed our calorie requirements.

🤔Today I have an important message for you because so many of us do not know the hidden dangers of these little packets we keep at home.

👍Firstly, you need to realise that 3-in-1 coffee is really just a hot, sweetened beverage that happens to have some instant coffee in it. I’d like to think of it as just a coffee-flavoured drink, so we gotta stop kidding ourselves that we’re having a coffee when it’s really not.

⚠️But unlike other sugared beverages… many #3in1 have an extra danger in them - it’s the creamer - and often these are partially hydrogenated oils, otherwise known as #transfat 🔪❤️ which contributes to heart disease.

🆘Wanna know what’s scarier? I meet many clients who consume up to 4 of these per day - that’s easily an excess of 500+ calories daily, causing you to gain weight steadily every month.

🤔Yesterday’s food swap post was an absolute HIT! And since @idaghazali said that my comparisons aren’t fair cos they don’t taste the same… well, today I did a bit more research and found us alternatives that actually tastes JUST AS GOOD as the real thing. -
👍 Healthy swaps are a great way for us to get started with taking charge of our health.  Health and fitness isn’t about perfection… I believe that as long as we try, we’re making progress. These posts are always about ‘trying’ and ‘options’.

🔪Remember that there’s always a choice when it comes to eating - we are in full control of what we put in our mouths. An ice-cream cone is not going to sneak up behind you and threaten you with a parang (knife).
