This is a good comparison to a modern day new growth 2x4 (left) to an old growth 2x4 (right) that I pulled out of a house.
The old growth 2x4 has many benefits over its modern day counterpart including: less wood movement, more structuralyl sound, more rot resistant, and more termite resistant. All of these benefits come from hundreds of years of much slower growth due to a shaded forest environment in which these tight ring patterns are created.
This is by no means a cry for more old growth deforestation and lumber production (in fact I'm very much against that) but it is a way for me to show you some of the quality materials lying behind your old home's walls. Construction materials and technologies have come a long way over the years but I would argue that lumber itself was never better than it was in the early 20th century.
