Saw #alleyezonme last night. Based on all these bad reviews, walked in not expecting much at all and left feeling exactly how @losangelesconfidential feels (To hell with these people negatively reviewing the film and calIing it a flop - it's not). I have my theories on why folks are trashing this movie - which is actually, in my opinion - a solid depiction of the artist, his complexities and the context within which he was raised. Its almost like "they" don't want you to see him for more of who he was and how his circumstances and our society created THUG LIFE. Many of the reviews feel like the folks writing haven't even seen the film. They focus on all the wrong things that are actually quite small compared to everything else examined in Pac's life. At least now so many who don't and didn't know him have a point of reference beyond his death and into his depth. Overall, this movie is really good. Not great, but it matches and certainly surpasses much of the above and below average stuff they shove down our throats. If you have the time, go support this film. Worth it. #tupac#tupacshakur#alleyezonmemovie#blackmusic#blackmusicmonth#pac#culture#movies#alleyezonme#fortheculture#blackmen#thuglife#2pac#2pacmovie
So we are out to dinner last night, there's a live #band, and we notice how as people walk in folks are cheering and giving rounds of applause. Of course, we join in with the fun - I start clapping too - and realize it's a birthday party. Then, the birthday boy gets on the mic and it's Bobby Sanabria, someone I'd never known or heard of until we crashed his party last night. Mr. Sanabria, who turned 60, was the first #PuertoRican to graduate from #Berklee College of Music, he's played with ALL the greats like #DizzieGillespie and #TitoPuente. In the room was #DukeEllington's grand daughter, who was also the first Black dancer on the Jackie Gleeson show, Tito Puente's son, the NYT best selling author of #Havana Nocturnal, the sax player next to him in this photo was in #RayCharles band and the #apollotheater's band, along with SO many more music and #cultural pioneers I can't name cus I don't remember who they were (blame the sangria). Only in NYC do you go to dinner and fall into a party like this. Where folks like this who opened, knocked down and built their own doors in music and culture are celebrating and let you stay, lol. So grateful for nights like this and def one I will NEVER forget. "Oh, hello, you are the young lady with the #African name," Sonny Rollins said to me on the phone. My heart smiled as I thought about how much my dad - a #jazz#lover and #musician - would have loved to shadow and talk with me while working on this over this past few weeks. What an honor it has been to help share and tell this man's story. If you don't know him, take a moment to #listen to his work, #read his words and let both speak to your #spirit and #soul. I ❤️Black People.
This show is all sorts of amazing. Hard to capture the scale and depth in an iPhone photo. Just need to see it with your own eyes. I know this is @kehindewiley's aesthetic, but this one feels different. Perhaps its the way these #paintings are exhibited, the magnitude, the lighting, the faces.... to see Black folk - in this case the artists of our time - captured in a way that has only been reserved for the whitest and most noble in western society is quite unsettling. Not because we are here now, but because, traditionally, when you walk into any #museum around the world, this size, scale and look of regality and honor, were and are still meant for anything and anyone but us. You can only stare as they stare right back at you, think of history and contemporary times, and wonder why. Must see if you can. More 👉🏾 #trickster
