Incubating (Week 19)
Anniversary dinner with Chris ended with sesame paste sweets in the shape of rocks ☺️ #japanesesweets
Mittens likes to chew on flowers and leaves, and as a result artfully arranged my birthday bouquet. Then he proceeded to puke it all up 🌷🌼
Chris swears that the bigeye ahi on Spanish toast at @pigandthelady on Oahu was the most delicious thing we ate in Hawaii. It was followed by their famous pho (in broth that's made over 18 hours) and the Balinese fish special. The Pig and the Lady is one of few restaurants featuring new takes on traditional Asian cooking that is missing in New York City.
After reading the glowing reviews for Hanalei Surfboard House on TripAdvisor, Chris and I decided to stay here for our four nights in Kauai. The owner, Simon Potts, is a former music industry VP from England who helped sign bands like The Cure and Radiohead in the 80s and 90s. The 3-room inn is decked out in island and music paraphernalia, including awards Simon received for breaking music sales records throughout his career. In the standalone guest house, dubbed the Love Shack, there's a "temperamental" jukebox from the 1940s. I didn't ask Simon to turn it on, but in the morning light, I found myself staring at the details of this extravagant-looking machine.
The best food in Kauai: Poke bowl from The Fish Express, just minutes from Lihue airport 🛫 It is so good that Chris and I went twice during our four days here. (We probably would have gone every day if it was closer to the North Shore where we stayed.) #thefishexpress is just a simple fish store that sells raw and ready-to-eat fish, bento boxes 🍱 and about ten types of #poke, from fresh, Hawaii caught ahi to spicy lobster and scallops. It also has a well-stocked toppings bar where you can pile on seaweed salad, slices of smoked salmon, ginger, avocado, potato macaroni salad, pickled veggies and various sauces. Our favorite meal in Kauai — and we ate it outside in front of the store by handicapped parking because it's takeout and they don't have tables 🐟
Getting a guided tour of @kauaifarmacytea was hands down the highlight of our Hawaii trip 🌿 The small, family-owned farm grows herbs and plants that are made into medicinal teas, balms, sprays for the body and even spices used in cooking. One of the staff members was in the middle of distilling lemongrass to be made into #hydrosol when we walked in. Kauai Farmacy doesn't sell wholesale, so the only way to get their products is on Kauai and directly online.
Short hike to Queen's Bath. Can't imagine the tide being low enough for people to swim in, but apparently people sometimes do (and risk being swept out to sea) 🌊
After further consideration, I'm sharing the larb gai from @theelephanttruck (in addition to the pad Thai in previous post) 🍃🌶🐓I felt guilty about withholding information because this dish is THAT good #larbgai#northshorefoodtrucks
Half an hour into the hike, walking down 'Cardiac Hill' didn't seem so bad. Then you remember that the only way out is the way you came in 😐 #CardiacHill
Went chasing a waterfall today because Chris insisted 🚿 #MananaTrail was challenging: 1/3 was a steep descent (which turned into an uphill scramble on the return trip) and another 1/3 was wet and slippery with mud. The payoff? Nice, but not spectacular.... Glad we got the exercise and swam under a small waterfall, but once is enough thank you
